IPL Photofacial for Sun Damage: What to Expect Before, During & After

Florida sun is relentless. And it shows in brown spots, uneven tone, and the kind of pigmentation that no foundation fully covers. IPL photofacial for sun damage is one of the most proven ways to actually reverse it.

If you’ve spent any real time on the Gulf Coast, and chances are, you have… your skin has taken the hit. Sun damage accumulates quietly. One summer it’s a freckle. A few years later it’s a cluster of age spots across your cheekbones, chest, and hands that no amount of SPF retroactively fixes.

That’s where IPL photofacial for sun damage comes in. At Glam + Glo, we use Lumecca — one of the most powerful IPL systems available — to target and clear the pigmentation, vascular lesions, and uneven tone that years of Florida living can leave behind.

What Is an IPL Photofacial — and What Makes Lumecca Different?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. During treatment, controlled bursts of broad-spectrum light penetrate the skin and are absorbed by pigmented and vascular targets — melanin in age spots, oxyhemoglobin in red vessels — without damaging surrounding tissue.
The result: pigmentation breaks down, vessels constrict, and your skin gradually clears.

Lumecca is not your average IPL. It delivers up to three times more energy than standard IPL devices, which means fewer sessions and faster clearance. Where traditional IPL typically requires four to six treatments, most Lumecca patients see superior results in one to three. That’s the difference between choosing well researched, quality treatments with an expert medical professional.

The benefits go deeper than pigment clearance. Research confirms that IPL irradiation stimulates dermal fibroblasts to upregulate the expression of collagen III and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) — key drivers of extracellular matrix construction and skin remodeling.[1]
Simply, IPL doesn’t just clear what’s on the surface. It triggers the skin’s own repair mechanisms at the cellular level, improving texture and density over time — not just tone.

Florida skin deserves a treatment that works as hard as the sun has. Lumecca delivers results that standard IPL can’t match — in a fraction of the sessions.

What Lumecca Treats

  • Age spots — brown and red pigmentation
  • Sun damage and uneven skin tone
  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Vascular lesions — spider veins, port wine stains, telangiectasias
  • Freckles (when desired)

Treatment areas commonly include the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms, and legs — anywhere that sees regular sun exposure. For Panama City Beach clients, that usually means all of the above.

Before Your Treatment

The most important thing you can do before an IPL photofacial for sun damage is stay out of the sun. We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner) for two to four weeks prior to your appointment. Active tans increase the risk of adverse reactions and can affect results.

You’ll also want to pause any retinoids or exfoliating acids in the days leading up to treatment. Come in with clean skin — no makeup, no SPF on the day of. At your consultation, Ashley will assess your skin tone, pigmentation concerns, and treatment goals to determine the right settings for you.

During Your Session

Lumecca sessions are fast. Most treatments run 20 to 30 minutes depending on the area being treated. The handpiece delivers pulses of light with a built-in cooling tip to keep the sensation comfortable. Clients typically describe the feeling as a warm snap — noticeable, not unbearable.

There’s no anesthesia required, and no downtime. You can return to your normal routine immediately after, just plan to skip the gym or steam room for the rest of the day.

After Treatment — What Actually Happens to Your Skin

Here’s what most clients don’t expect: the spots get darker before they clear. This is completely normal and a sign the treatment is working. The light has targeted the pigment, which rises to the surface and flakes off naturally over the course of one to two weeks. What’s left beneath is cleaner, more even skin.

Sun protection after IPL isn’t optional. Freshly treated skin is sensitive, and unprotected sun exposure can undo results and cause new pigmentation. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ becomes a non-negotiable part of your routine — which, honestly, it should have been all along.

How Many IPL Treatments Do You Actually Need?

For most sun damage concerns, Lumecca delivers visible improvement in one to three sessions — significantly fewer than standard IPL protocols, which typically recommend four to six. Results continue to improve for several weeks after each treatment as pigment continues to surface and clear.

The number of sessions depends on the depth and severity of your pigmentation. Superficial sun spots typically clear fastest. Deeper, more established pigmentation or active rosacea may require additional treatments. Your provider will give you a realistic expectation at your consultation.

For ongoing maintenance — especially important for Florida clients who don’t stop living outside — a single annual touch-up session is often all that’s needed to maintain results, but quarterly treatments are recommended for anti-aging purposes.

Is IPL Right for You? What to Know Before Booking

Lumecca IPL works best on lighter to medium dark skin tones I-IV with distinct pigmented lesions. It is not recommended for very dark skin tones or for clients who are actively tanned. If you’re unsure whether you’re a candidate, that’s exactly what a consultation is for.

The ideal Lumecca candidate is someone dealing with visible sun damage, age spots, rosacea, or vascular irregularities — and who wants real clearance without surgery, extended downtime, or a series of six-plus sessions. If that’s you, it’s worth the conversation.

Sun damage is earned. Clearing it should be effortless.
